How to print Studio 5000 ladder logic to a PDF people can read

Audits, handover packs, retrofit quotes and the binder in the control room all want the program on paper or in a PDF. The person who needs it rarely has Studio 5000.

In Studio 5000, choose File › Print and pick the routines or the whole project, then print to a PDF printer such as Microsoft Print to PDF; the report options control whether tags, cross-references and comments are included. Without Studio 5000, Rungview prints any ladder routine from an .ACD or .L5X to PDF, with rung numbers, comments and tag descriptions, from your own computer.

In Studio 5000

File › Print offers the current routine, selected routines or the whole controller. Report settings choose what's included: rung comments, tag descriptions, cross-reference listings, data types. Send it to a PDF printer. A full project report can run to hundreds of pages, so print only what the reader needs.

In Rungview

Open the routine and use print (Pro). The ladder prints as drawn, one rung after another with its number, comment and the description of each tag above its contact or coil. Print the compare view to document a change between two versions.

What makes a useful printout

  • Tag descriptions on the drawing. "Guard_Closed" is fine; "Infeed guard door closed, PE-204" is better for the person on the floor.
  • Rung comments. They explain intent, which the logic alone doesn't.
  • Only the relevant routines. A 600-page dump helps nobody.
  • A date and revision. Note which version of the project the printout came from.

Put the program in a PDF

Open the project, print the routines that matter. No Studio 5000 needed.
